Grant Park, Chicago | Academic Project
The Grant Park Farmers’ Market explores how modular timber construction, repetitive structural systems, and adaptable circulation can create a flexible and community-oriented public space.
Rather than designing individual vendor stalls, the project is conceived as a unified architectural system organized beneath a continuous timber roof. A central courtyard acts as the social core, creating moments of gathering, openness, and natural light while preserving the existing trees and allowing the architecture to respond to the landscape.
Movable vendor booths are arranged within a repetitive structural grid, allowing the market to adapt to different programs and patterns of movement. The continuous timber roof establishes rhythm, shade, and spatial hierarchy, while layered structural elements create changing conditions of light and shadow throughout the market.
The project investigates how simple structural language and modularity can generate varied spatial experiences, creating an architecture that is adaptable, social, and responsive to its site.
